Sure, maybe I’m romanticizing this game because of the very reason the Isle of Man TT was canceled–the same, virus-based reason I now can’t leave my house for three months. At its peak, it’s scarier than the Resident Evil 2 remake. It’s Netflix’s The Witcher of racers: something that isn’t mindblowing on a specific level, but nothing is bad, and the overall experience is so enthralling that you can’t stop engaging with it. I never thought I’d find myself enjoying a game despite the fact it doesn’t truly excel at one thing. It’s not the best-looking racing game, it’s not the friendliest, the sound isn’t perfect, the career mode isn’t the easiest–yet everything just kinda… works. It’s fast, frenetic and requires obscene amounts of patience to get the most out of it. It can almost sound tinny and muted you’ll want noisy and bass-heavy, but it doesn’t hit that high. I can let the average visuals slide–they’re far more than adequate for what is, to be fair, a niche game–but the SFX in any view other than following the bike can lack the gravitas of being behind the bars. The sound of the surroundings whizzing past you is like nothing I’ve heard before it’s simultaneously exciting and terrifying. They’re far from perfect, but the landscape is lush and attractive, even though you spend 99% of your time focused 100 yards ahead. Kylotonn has struck a good balance with the graphics and sound. When you do get a half-decent result–I aimed for top three if I chose medium or hard–I felt like ten men.
There was no room for error or caution you have to go hard or go home. After that, if I chose anything other than the easiest race of the three available, the competition completely outraced me. Admittedly, it was only by tenths of a second, but I still scraped the victory.
In the build-up race, I managed to win despite falling off the bike once.

I really do mean that it’s like nothing I’ve played before, and for that reason alone I found myself constantly going back to it, whether it was just a quick race, a session of free roam as the legendary Joey Dunlop himself, or a blundersome jaunt in career mode, where I fundamentally angered my sponsor.Ĭareer mode is simple in principle, but based on a lot of gambles. Once you get to grips with the accurate, delayed turning mechanics, plus the odd but completely accurate relationship between cornering and the throttle, you’re good to go. The whole game is about high speed–afforded by the Snaefell Mountain Course’s insane straights, similar to the Nürburgring’s Döttinger Höhe–but as soon as you hit those corners, however slight they may be, it gets difficult. Getting used to the controls is painful, even in automatic. Go too slowly around a corner? You’re on two wheels, you idiot, of course you’re going to fall off. Catch the sidewalk? Chances are you’ll crash. These precarious issues are, to be fair, easy to understand. 'TT Isle of Man–Ride on the Edge 2' looks simple, but it really isn't.
